Make / Model: Digidesign DIGI 002 R
Year: 2000s
I never really got into Pro-tools. I used it a few times in the early 2000s, and every time I used it, I was put off by 1) how clunky the interface was, and 2) how bad it sounded.
However, when I was working commercially as an engineer, I thought about getting a small setup to offer compatability with Pro-Tools, as back then, most folks used it.
And back then (not sure if it is still this way) to use Pro-Tools, you had to use THEIR interface. Another big downside, as ALL of their interfaces were subpar for the price they sold them for, even their top of the line stuff, was just mediocre, and not nearly worth what the price was. So since they all basically sucked, I got one of the cheapest options, a small DIGI 002 Rack, and for a few months, ran some stuff with it.
And it sucked. Horribly. Worst mic pres I had ever used. Its conversion was grainy AF. Just overall, a very overpriced, mediocre piece of gear with BAD mic preamps.
Could you make records with it? I’ve know people that have. But you could also drive your car with one arm behind your back. Will you drive? yeah, but it will take WAY more effort that you could be putting into other parts of the process.
So yeah, fuck this thing.
